meditation during negative times

the other day i had a comment on my blogging in waves post about how meditation is the last thing on your mind when you are in the thick of a negative situation or crisis.

do you, lovely readers, also feel this way and have any thoughts and/or suggestions as to how to get back into the groove of meditation when your mind doesn't seem to be in the right space?

merci in advance!!

blogging in waves

it seems as if i've had a lot to say recently. :)

sometimes my blogging comes in waves - a whole lot at once and then it goes down to a trickle (aka only monday moment of zen posts).

just like the moon has an impact on the ocean, it also has an impact on us as well.

last friday, march 4th was the new moon. with the new moon our energy can also be slower and we can be more reflective and pensive. the new moon is the perfect time to create new goals or dreams for yourself. it's also a time to give up anything that no longer serves you.

in my yoga classes last week i asked my students while they were lying on their sides, before coming back up to an easy seat to end class, to think of one thing that they want to get rid of. it could be anything from a negative relationship, to a job or project that they no longer want, to that last 5 pounds. i asked them to imagine that as they sat up that was left behind on the floor. to actually picture whatever was no longer serving them being left behind so that something newer and better could come in it's place.

i also showed them the shivalingam mudra.

the shivalingam mudra is an energizing and powerful mudra when your energy is down, when you feel as though you need more power over a specific situation or just in general, to help break negative thought patterns, and to help boost self-confidence and self-esteem. perfect for the new moon!!

to always look on the bright side?

first off, i want to thank you guys SO much for reading and for all of your comments on the blog recently. you guys make my heart swell with joy & gratitude!!

secondly, happy fat tuesday everyone!!

and now onto the situation at hand...

blogging is a peculiar thing sometimes, isn't it?

it's as if sometimes we feel the need to only share or blog about the bright side of things. we don't want to let people know about the messy little situations that come up in our life for several reasons; you might be embarrassed about your situation, people will think you are complaining, people won't care cause they have their own shit to worry about, etc, etc, etc...

but indeed, we are human, we ALL have good days and we all have bad days and we all survive both!

just as there is no need to dwell on the negative, there is no need to only focus on the positive. that makes us seem less real. good or bad, i'm about as REAL as it gets.

:)

i try to find that middle ground.

i try to see both sides of the coin.

do you?

foot in mouth, almost, but not quite

my "un-yogic" blog post caused quite a stir. i got a lot of comments on both the post itself and on my facebook page.

while i was writing this from a point of view of me being un-yogic some others feelings got hurt in the process.

this was not my intention - ever!!

when i started this blog (3 years ago the 16th of this month!!) i laid some very basic ground rules:

would i want people to read this if is published on the front of the new york times??
** yes - proceed ** no - definitely do not publish ** maybe? - still, do not publish**

and i still stand by this today.

when i re-read what i wrote for the umpteenth time i thought that maybe something that i had written might be taken wrong. but as always in the publishing world, it was too late...

so, i say this out of complete sincerity - i never meant to hurt anyone's feelings and since that i know i did, please know that i am very, very sorry!!

it's not about one specific person, incident, situation, etc. it's about the shifting of energy as a whole. i am reminded of the quote i put up a couple of monday's ago for the moment of zen.

"in the entire world, there is not one human being who is free from pain. even in favorable conditions, a person encounters struggle. the external form of struggle appears to be cruel. some describe it as a horrible demon, but its nature is not malicious. in fact, it is proper to welcome struggle, for its arrival is always auspicious. struggle keeps us from growing sluggish. it changes an animal into an ideal person. it transforms an ordinary human into a spiritually-awake person respected by the world... it is alright if we cannot receive struggle with love, but struggle should never be discarded. to discard struggle is to discard god's grace."
~ swami kripalu

although it may be hard to welcome struggle when you are in the midst of it, try to remind yourself that it is there for a reason. you will take away a lesson from it. for each time there is struggle there is also a shift of energy that helps us grow. and yes, i have to remind myself of this exact thing when i'm in the midst of struggle. :)

one of my favorite mantra's is lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu

which translates to "may all beings everywhere be happy and free. may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all."

with an emphasis on the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life being key.

so what about you guys, any mantra or quote that you go to when in the midst of struggle?

introducing babaji bones

i've tried to keep this one under wraps but with only 1 week left i can't keep it secret any longer!!

i went with a dear friend to wheeling to check out the retired racing greyhounds because she was looking to adopt one. while i have always wanted to get a greyhound (one of the many dogs on the list of must-own before i die) i went not with the intention of bringing one home but just the opposite. i said to several people "i will not bring a dog home!!" HA!!!

i was saying that out loud to try to be strong. oh sure, i knew i was weak but i didn't realize how weak until one look at this face....

i sent ryan a photo text of this pup with "gotta be bold" as the title. that was his racing name however ryan told me i was getting weak as he thought i was the one that had to be bold. :)

and so, you know where the rest of this story goes...

next monday, one week from today, the lady from the greyhound rescue/adoption will make a home visit with him and if all goes well, he will get to stay!!

and so i know you are thinking to yourself 'why in the hell did she name that dog babaji bones?!'

well... babaji is a beloved yogi who is known as "the deathless avatar." he learned to overcome all physical limitations. and babaji was the one who encouraged paramahansa yogananda to teach yoga to the western world as a way to spread enlightenment. pretty cool, eh?

and... bones comes from a cute name i had picked out for a future adoption of a pit-bull (which is just a silly name). i thought, why wait?!

so there you have it - babaji bones. you can look forward to reading more about babaji in the future. :)

un-yogic

do i.....

cuss (sometimes like a sailor)???

occasionally eat meat???

speed thru yellow lights (or even occasionally run red lights)???

vent to my boyfriend about how frustrated i am over how un-yogic some things are at my yoga studio???

get angry or defensive over stupid shit???

have to have things my way???

be sarcastic so much so that sometimes it seems rude???

sometimes have a short temper???

get selfish and put myself first???

you betcha!!!

so tell me... what sort of un-yogic behaviors do you sometimes indulge in?

thoughts

in a recent yoga class that i was lucky enough to attend focused the class on half asana and half meditation. the teacher (and a dear friend of mine) had us to set in a circle for the meditation portion of the class. as she was leading us to our find our stillness she said something to the effect of not letting other people put us in boxes that label what we are, that we are much more than that. while at the time it didn't really sink in until after the mediation was over and we shared any experiences we had and spent a little time talking. it was at that point another student said she really enjoyed what she had said about that. and i thought to myself, "yeah, exactly, why do we let other people dictate what we do or who we are?!"

sure we all have labels of what it is we do: mother, daughter, friend, lover, accountant, lawyer, landscaper, cat person, lover of frogs, francophile, and on & on. but those labels are just that... labels. they can describe us but they aren't who we really are. and why do we feel the need to fit into these labels or boxes that others put upon us? sure, we want people to like us but you can't make everyone happy all of the time. and if you try you will certainly go mad!

so why not be who you are and own it?! it will make things a lot easier in the end, don't you think??

life lessons from being sick

hello loves! you might have been wondering why i haven't been blogging recently or have noticed my absence on my beloved twitter. well, i've been down and out with some sort of silly bug. it's been going around and just when i thought i had skirted around it... it got me.

in fact, i'm blogging from my comfy bed with homemade chai, pets, pillows, books, magazines and my trusted vic mac-key nearby. (yes, i was a big fan of shawn ryan's the shield. therein lies the name of my macbook pro.)

i've had to cancel massage clients, bowenwork clients, yoga classes and the end all - be all my yoga & creativity workshop i have scheduled for tomorrow. (sigh!) it's given me a chance to catch up on some things though (between bouts of sleep that is): some fabulous articles online, and the 2nd & 3rd of this trilogy (love!).

but in ways, i guess i had this little life lesson coming. i've been going non-stop for i can't remember how long. with a long line of "yes, i can fit you in" "sure, tomorrow is fine" "it's ok, don't worry about it." and the list goes on & on. but one thing you have to remember is if you don't take care of yourself first, then you can't take care of others. at least not properly anyways.

so life's little lesson has made me slow down even though i didn't want to. but i can say that i've taken a lot away from this lesson. just to name a few:

#1 take care of yourself first
#2 learn to say no when it's best for me
#3 learn to better prioritize tasks (and people for that matter)

i'm hoping that you stay healthy & well.

rest

yesterday i read from "meditations from the mat" about rest in yoga. all of the yoga teachers i know (including myself) urge students to take a rest whenever their body needs it. after all, we are not your best teacher, you the student are! you know your body better than anyone else!

sometimes, myself included in this, will push ourselves through postures only to do half as well as we would have if we would have taken a few resting breaths in child's pose or an equivalent resting pose.

as you become more familiar with yoga and the poses you can learn to take a quick rest during the posture. you do this by softening some muscles that aren't required to hold that pose. for instance, you don't need to clinch your jaw in order to get into your best virabhadrasana 1. clinching your jaw doesn't make you any stronger as a warrior so let it go and maybe smile a little. :)

so now that you've given yourself permission to let yourself rest when you need to during your yoga practice, let's look at how we can take that practice off the mat.

especially during this time of year when colds & flues are getting passed around like candy at halloween we should take care of ourselves so that hopefully we don't get sick. and if we do get sick then by resting properly will allow our bodies to heal more quickly thus getting you out there faster to do the things that you do best!

here are a few ways you can take your rest off the mat:

~ take a bed day, half a bed day, or even a few hours to rest in bed either before your day begins or after it ends

~ sit by the fireplace and let the warmth and magic surround you

~ sit down with a mug of hot tea (or coffee) in hand, feel the warmth against your hands, and sip slowly

~ take time to snuggle with pets or loved ones - this is welcomed and enjoyed by everyone

~ call up a friend that you haven't talked to in a while and reminisce about something silly that you did or happened in the past - laughter is medicine for the soul!

i am taking my own advice today. i am writing this post from bed with a mug of honey lemon ginseng green tea on one side of me, my kitty (pictured above) on the other side and my pup in between my feet. :)

may you find your rest on and off the mat!

"the sunflowers"

come with me
into the field of sunflowers.
their faces are burnished disks,
their dry spines

creak like ship masts,
their green leaves,
so heavy and many,
fill all day with the sticky

sugars of the sun.
come with me
to visit the sunflowers,
they are shy

but want to be friends;
they have wonderful stories
of when they were young -
the important weather,

the wandering crows.
don't be afraid
to ask them questions!
their bright faces,

which follow the sun,
will listen, and all
those rows of seeds -
each one a new life!

hope for a deeper acquaintance;
each of them, though it stands
in a crowd of many,
like a separate universe,

is lonely, the long work
of turning their lives
into a celebration
is not easy. come

and let us talk with those modest faces,
the simple garments of leaves,
the coarse roots in the earth
so uprightly burning.

~ mary oliver

when my friend, jill, owner of sunflower yoga studio in indiana, pa posted this beautiful photo on her facebook page, i was instantly smitten. you see, sunflowers have been coming up a lot for me recently. i have been eating sunbutter like it's going out of style. love it!! such a perfect in between massage or yoga snack for me. i've also recently switched over to using sunflower oil while giving massages as it doesn't dry my skin out like some other massage oil i've used in the past. i think i'm going to have a sunflower grow out of the top of my head soon. :)

i asked jill to enlighten me to the significance of sunflowers. her response was "this time of year, we all need a little bit of solar plexus chakra energy, and sunflowers are the best symbol i know of...inner strength, warmth, radiance...let it shine!"

i am letting my inner sunflower shine, are you?

2011

happy new year!!

it's that time of year for reflection about the past and dreaming about the future. like a lot of the fabulous bloggers i know, i too have picked a word to focus on for 2011.

For the past several years I have picked a word (or two when I can’t decide) to focus on for that year. My word for 2009 was “focus” since I was laid off from my accounting job and I needed to focus on what direction I wanted to pursue. My words for 2010 were “positivity” and “abundance” because I was letting go of things that no longer served me and replacing them with positive things.

I have decided that my word for 2011 is “manifest” since I am now in the processing of manifesting a joyful and fulfilling life.

how about you loves? what is your word(s) or mantra for 2011?

may 2011 be the best year yet!!

end with a bang

this past wednesday was the perfect day off.

one of my good friends lela & i started the day with breakfast at one of my favorite local cafes, the blue moose cafe. we then headed to pittsburgh to do a yin yoga workshop with richard gartner.

we then headed back to motown and met up with ryan at our favorite place to eat, mother india before dashing off to watch true grit.

while i'm not a western loving girl i have to admit this was a pretty good movie. good enough in fact that i asked ryan to watch the original this evening. i definitely enjoyed the newer edition. no offense to "duke." :)

i'm enjoying my new year's eve at home with ryan & the pets. i wish you a safe and happy new year!

if you are local (and not too hung over) consider joining me tomorrow for a new year's day yoga practice. details here.

what if...

laying low

i know you're probably wondering where i've been lately. during my 40 day yoga challenge i was posting pretty frequently and while i enjoyed that i've decided to take a wee brake. a bit of breathing room perhaps.

i just recently finished "168 hours: you have more time than you think" by laura vanderkam. fabulous book! this week i am keeping a time log. i started it on sunday and will wrap it up tomorrow night. i'm not exactly the best at doing "billable hours" or keeping excellent track of my time but i'm trying to stay ahead of it. or at least the best i can. this will give me a decent idea as to where exactly my time is going.

interested in where your time is going or seeing how you can create a little more time here and there? check out laura's website and print or download a copy of her time management spreadsheet. if you've read this book or kept track of where your time is going i'd love to hear from you.

have a lovely weekend!

40 days of yoga - day 40

i must say 40 days went by rather quickly! i enjoyed my 40 day yoga challenge immensely.

on my last day, i did a 30 minute practice in our beautiful 'shanti' yoga room at blissblissbliss. it was very apropos that i totally rocked a headstand on my 40th day!! this headstand was better than any of my previous ones. i was able to go up without using the wall and stay up for about 10 breaths. i was super psyched! i also rocked my wheel pose for about 5 breaths and stayed in crow for about 1... still working on that one ;)

what i've learned during my 40 days:

~ i'm a lot stronger than i give myself credit for
~ it takes time & persistence to achieve harder poses
~ it's good to challenge myself - keeps my pitta happy :)
~ having you cheering me on has helped tremendously!! seriously, more than you know!!
~ finding even a 15 minute window of time can sometimes be hard so just do what you can, when you can.
~ your body starts craving yoga the more you do it!
~ it's good for my body, mind & spirit
~ even a few minutes of yoga per day can make a huge difference on your mood & outlook

if you would like to participate in a yoga challenge but haven't the slightest idea where to start, consider joining yoga journal's 21 day yoga challenge that starts january 10th. i'll be joining the challenge as well, we can do it together!

thank you SO much for following along with my yoga challenge & for cheering me on!!

40 days of yoga - day 37 & 38

day 37 was a long day. i didn't exactly get in a personal practice but i definitely got it a LOT of movement. i taught 2 yoga classes and did 4 massages. i also treated myself to my favorite place to eat in morgantown - mother india for their fabulous lunch buffet & some masala chai! yum!! i also indulged in a mid-day nap since my day was split up nicely.

day 38 - i got in my practice this morning shortly after waking. i did a baron baptiste inspired practice. very inspiring!!

if you are inspired by this challenge and would like to start your own yoga challenge, yoga journal is doing a 21 day challenge starting jan 10th. i signed up, i figured why not, right?! :)

40 days of yoga - day 36

i took advantage of our beautiful yoga studio and did about a 20-25 minute practice. it was lovely to look out of the french door and see the little bit of snow on the ground as i'm saluting the sun. i practiced my 3 asanas that i've been working diligently on and was able to rock all three... at least for a few breaths. :)

headstand

wheel
and crow

i had a dream the other night that i was able to rock my crow pose! i am hoping that dream becomes a reality (hopefully soon lol).

only 4 more days before i hit 40!!

40 days of yoga - day 35

today's practice was a pleasant surprise. i hosted a holiday detox workshop today and only had one person show up who just happens to be in the teacher training program that i went through. so instead of doing the workshop & charging her, we took turns teaching each other things and bouncing ideas off of each other. it was a really lovely time. she then came over to my house and we enjoyed some tea & some girl time.

i'm currently curled up on the couch with my laptop, my pup cadyn, december's yoga journal magazine and a hot cup of cinnamon, cardamom & ginger tea all while the fire burns. ahhh i love this time of year! i am hoping that it keeps snowing enough that i can make a snowman tomorrow. :)

40 days of yoga - days 32, 33 & 34

thursday - day 32 - in keeping with satya, i didn't get in a physical asana practice this day.

friday - day 33 - some lovely yin & restorative yoga by the fireplace

saturday - day 34 - wasn't a full 15 minutes in a row but a few minutes in a pose here and there throughout my day was all i could manage.

i'm off to teach a holiday detox workshop and then get in my own practice.

hugs & namaste!

40 days of yoga - day 31

happy december!!

today is my day off and earlier i tweeted that i was contemplating on what to do: read, nap or do yoga by the fireplace. aaannnddd yoga wins!

i've been working hard to be able to do a headstand in the middle of the room. while i'm not quite there yet, i am well on my way. headstand is one of the three asanas that i've been working on the hardest followed by crow & wheel.

it has been really a special treat to do yoga by my fireplace
