rest
sometimes, myself included in this, will push ourselves through postures only to do half as well as we would have if we would have taken a few resting breaths in child's pose or an equivalent resting pose.
as you become more familiar with yoga and the poses you can learn to take a quick rest during the posture. you do this by softening some muscles that aren't required to hold that pose. for instance, you don't need to clinch your jaw in order to get into your best virabhadrasana 1. clinching your jaw doesn't make you any stronger as a warrior so let it go and maybe smile a little. :)
so now that you've given yourself permission to let yourself rest when you need to during your yoga practice, let's look at how we can take that practice off the mat.
especially during this time of year when colds & flues are getting passed around like candy at halloween we should take care of ourselves so that hopefully we don't get sick. and if we do get sick then by resting properly will allow our bodies to heal more quickly thus getting you out there faster to do the things that you do best!
here are a few ways you can take your rest off the mat:
~ take a bed day, half a bed day, or even a few hours to rest in bed either before your day begins or after it ends
~ sit by the fireplace and let the warmth and magic surround you
~ sit down with a mug of hot tea (or coffee) in hand, feel the warmth against your hands, and sip slowly
~ take time to snuggle with pets or loved ones - this is welcomed and enjoyed by everyone
~ call up a friend that you haven't talked to in a while and reminisce about something silly that you did or happened in the past - laughter is medicine for the soul!
i am taking my own advice today. i am writing this post from bed with a mug of honey lemon ginseng green tea on one side of me, my kitty (pictured above) on the other side and my pup in between my feet. :)
may you find your rest on and off the mat!

into the field of sunflowers.
their faces are burnished disks,
their dry spines
creak like ship masts,
their green leaves,
so heavy and many,
fill all day with the sticky
sugars of the sun.
come with me
to visit the sunflowers,
they are shy
but want to be friends;
they have wonderful stories
of when they were young -
the important weather,
the wandering crows.
don't be afraid
to ask them questions!
their bright faces,
which follow the sun,
will listen, and all
those rows of seeds -
each one a new life!
hope for a deeper acquaintance;
each of them, though it stands
in a crowd of many,
like a separate universe,
is lonely, the long work
of turning their lives
into a celebration
is not easy. come
and let us talk with those modest faces,
the simple garments of leaves,
the coarse roots in the earth
so uprightly burning.
~ mary oliver
i asked jill to enlighten me to the significance of sunflowers. her response was "this time of year, we all need a little bit of solar plexus chakra energy, and sunflowers are the best symbol i know of...inner strength, warmth, radiance...let it shine!"
i am letting my inner sunflower shine, are you?
hugs!!

FREE vinyasa class
in case you weren't aware, blissblissbliss has moved to greenbag rd in morgantown. unfortunately for those of you who are a fan of gps you are going to have to do this one the old school way as gps doesn't recognize our address :)
if you are on greenbag rd at the 4 way stop where the kingwood pike crosses it then drive toward sabraton. here is what you will see on the left in this order:
wonder bread store
mountainview elementary school
richard drive
a house
clinton water association building
and we are the next left - there is a business plaza that has beautiful buildings that look like houses. up front you'll see an insurance company and about town realty. we are in the back building, on the left. there aren't many visible signs but i assure you, if you follow these directions it will lead you right into blissville. :)
if you have any questions or concerns about the class or how to find us, please don't hesitate to email me: melitamollohan@gmail.com.

2011
happy new year!!
it's that time of year for reflection about the past and dreaming about the future. like a lot of the fabulous bloggers i know, i too have picked a word to focus on for 2011.
For the past several years I have picked a word (or two when I can’t decide) to focus on for that year. My word for 2009 was “focus” since I was laid off from my accounting job and I needed to focus on what direction I wanted to pursue. My words for 2010 were “positivity” and “abundance” because I was letting go of things that no longer served me and replacing them with positive things.
I have decided that my word for 2011 is “manifest” since I am now in the processing of manifesting a joyful and fulfilling life.
how about you loves? what is your word(s) or mantra for 2011?
may 2011 be the best year yet!!
